FAYETTEVILLE, NY. – July 19, 2021 - Sam Tadevossian, a 14-year-old brown belt karate student at Lawrence World Class Karate dojo in Fayetteville, NY, excelled at the 2021 AAU Karate Nationals held recently in Greenville, South Carolina. For his demonstration of the Saifa Kata at the event, Sam was awarded a bronze medal and was placed third overall in the United States at the intermediate level. This was the first time he had entered a national karate competition.

Karatekas (karate students) from hundreds of karate dojos across the United States came to the AAU Nationals to compete against each other in Kubudo (weapon systems), Kata (choreographed set pattern of movements), and Kumite (a controlled, competitive fight using basic techniques delivered with "empty hands").

Tadevossian, a student in the Jamesville-DeWitt school district who has been studying karate for three years, said, “This was a great experience for me, and I was very pleased with my results. I prepared very hard for this and competed against some very talented karatekas. I am looking forward to this competition next year.”

Rande Lawrence, head teacher at Lawrence World Class Karate, said, “This is a major achievement for a karate student entering his first national championship. Both Sam’s parents and I are exceptionally proud of what he has accomplished. This shows you what the power of focus, determination and tenacity can do. Sam faced some serious competition, and he held his own.”

Saifa kata focuses on situations where the karateka is grabbed by an attacker, and they respond by forcefully escaping from the attackers grip and then deliver a sequence of very powerful punches, backhanded strikes and hammer-fists.
